We introduce you to one of our accounting enthusiasts—Jamine van Niekerk

According to recent insights by Deloitte, in 2021, the proportion of women in leadership roles within financial services firms stood at 24% and is projected to grow to 28% by 2030—still below parity. In light of these statistics, we took a moment to chat to one of our Group’s finance experts—Jamine van Niekerk.

Jamine holds over 20 years of experience within the finance sector and is currently employed as an accountant at Overberg Wealth and Risk Management—an integral part of our Group’s Agri Inputs and Services segment. Overberg Wealth and Risk is an authorised financial services provider with a large footprint in the insurance sector. As a member of their senior management team, Jamine is responsible for helping the business make critical financial decisions by collecting, tracking, and correcting finances.

Amongst an array of additional responsibilities, Jamine is also responsible for overseeing financial audits, reconciling bank statements, and ensuring financial records are accurate throughout the year. In addition to her role at Overberg Wealth and Risk, Jamine also serves as a trustee on the AAF Group Pension Fund and the old MKB Pension Fund.

Please share some insight into your career journey thus far.

“I studied at the University of Stellenbosch and attained my B.Comm (Financial Accounting) degree in 2001,” says Jamine. “After my graduation, I started my articles and worked as an Accountant at PwC for a year. Soon after, the entrepreneurial bug bit and inspired me to start my own accounting firm—an adventure that I enjoyed for 3.5 years—and hope to experience in the future once again. After this, I gained additional experience at Raiël for a further 2 years before joining MKB in Moorreesburg. When Overberg Agri bought MKB, I moved to join the finance team in Caledon, which is actually what led to me beginning my journey at Overberg Wealth and Risk. I have been with the company since its inception in March 2017,” notes Jamine.

What do you love the most about your job?

“I am an Accountant… While there is nothing to ‘love’ about it, I do love being mentally stimulated. I also really enjoy being able to help people with what I do and appreciate the opportunity to use my analytical and operational skills to build the business,” says Jamine.

Do you think South African women have enough opportunity to excel in your profession?

“I do believe that when women receive the chance, they do shine. I also believe that while women in leadership positions tend to demonstrate more empathy with their personnel, they also expect and help to bring out the best in their employees,” continues Jamine.

Have you ever had a career mentor?

“The managing director of Overberg Wealth and Risk Management, Abri Dickason, has always believed in my abilities and has also given me the opportunity to grow and be my best,” concludes Jamine.
